Who We Are

Our mission is to enhance the welfare of pets and homeless animals by supporting our community to practice responsible ownership, compassionate care, and humane treatment.

Four Corners Animal League has made a huge difference in the lives of thousands of animals in Taos County and beyond. Pet overpopulation is a staggering problem here in Taos and costs many animals their lives.

What We Do

    Beyond the neglect and abuse of unwanted pets.

    Thousands of dollars in revenue is spent trying to deal with issues that arise from unwanted animals wandering the streets and roads of the valley. Even the best-intentioned family or individual can be overwhelmed with the needs of a growing number of pets in their household.

    Since 2000, Four Corners Animal Leagues has paid for the spaying and neutering of over 17,000 dogs and cats in the Taos area. Through their low cost/no cost spay and neuter program, and in conjunction with the veterinarians in the valley, Four Corners Animal League is changing the fate of animals across Northern New Mexico.

    We have transferred over 7,000 animals to Colorado to be placed in good homes.

    Though education we are getting the message out, every animal needs protection, every dog and cat deserves shelter and food and a loving home. These friends without voices need our protection and our help. Four Corners Animal League helping creatures without a voice.

    Four Corners Animal League is not an animal shelter. We have no central location for processing animals. Instead we are actively involved in education through Taos County. We conduct our programs at elementary schools and door-to-door, discussing loving care of pets and all living creatures. Our education always urges spaying and neutering and focuses on the suffering that occurs when unwanted animals proliferate in a small community.

    Foster & Adoption Programs

    We also offer foster and adoption support programs, connecting animals who have been abandoned or mistreated with caring individuals throughout the community. Our community has responded with tremendous compassion, opening their homes to provide temporary care until permanent placement can be found. We are always in need of responsible foster caregivers.

Our Services

Animal Rescue Stories

  • Ralph is a 13-year-old boy in a man's body!! He's like a clumsy teen kid with a heart of gold. At approximately 80 lbs., Ralph thinks he's a lap dog. Prior to being rescued by Four Corners Animal League (F.C.A.L.), Ralph was chained up outside all day, every day...no matter the weather. When we went to pick Ralph up from the man who no longer wanted him, it took three of his to pick him up and get him into the car. Ralph was petrified. It took one week with lots of love and tenderness to finally see his tail, as it was always tightly tucked between his legs. He did not know how to play. Ralph has learned to trust people. One can see his beautiful heart the moment one meets him.

  • FCAL rehabilitated and found homes for three kitties. It took them 2-3 months to adjust, but once they finally did, they were affectionate– sleeping and sitting with us while we watched tv. All 3 were spayed/neutered and vaccinated through the free clinic, Spay Taos.

  • JV likely suffered an attack. Bones were crushed, broken, and dislocated, and he had a missing eye. He had a family, but they could not keep him safe, so he is now a permanent resident in FCAL's Assistant Director, Barbara's, cat room. He has to be monitored by vet specialists due to the extent of his injuries, but JV does not care about what happened in the past. He is a loving, happy boy. He has gained 4 pounds in three months, and he is looking pretty handsome! He loves to snuggle and to play. We thank Julie Jewelz Julez for rescuing him and the veterinarians who played a role in helping with his recovery.

  • A Rottie mix puppy was thrown from a car and suffered several fractures. She followed rehabilitation for her physical injuries, but her lack of socialization resulted in reactivity. Two male puppies dumped at her foster home taught her how to be a puppy. Initially, her time with the boys had to be limited until she healed, but after recovery, she was able to make up for missed time and finally be a puppy!
